Voices for Change: Gun Violence Awareness Month March

Voices for Change: Marching Against Gun Violence. Mayor Adams speaks to the hundreds of violence interrupters whose work keep our communities safe.

In a powerful display of unity and determination, Community Capacity Development, together with hundreds of individuals took to the streets this Saturday, joining together to march against the scourge of gun violence that plagues our communities. Their voices, their stories, and their unwavering resolve serve as a beacon of hope in the fight for a safer, more secure future.

The march, part of the Wear Orange movement, serves as a poignant tribute to those who have lost their lives to gun violence and a source of solace and support for survivors. Amidst the sea of orange, participants honor the memories of loved ones while also coming together to find strength and solidarity in their shared experiences.

As the marchers traverse the Brooklyn Bridge, their message is clear: the status quo is unacceptable, and change is imperative. Despite the staggering toll of gun violence, there is reason for cautious optimism. Recent NYPD data indicates a 25% decrease in shootings citywide compared to last year—a promising sign that concerted efforts to address this crisis are making a difference.

Gun violence is a public health crisis that affects us all, regardless of economic status. With an average of 120 lives lost to guns each day and hundreds more injured, the urgency of the issue cannot be overstated. Together, we must advocate for sensible policies, prioritize mental health, and promote responsible gun ownership to stem the tide of violence that threatens our communities.
