Safe Summer 2022 Launch Commitment to Community Safety

Today marks a pivotal moment in our collective journey towards creating safer and more resilient communities. Our Executive Director K Bain, is proud to represent Community Capacity Development (CCD) as we stand alongside leaders from across New York City to launch Safe Summer 2022 during Gun Violence Awareness Month. All corners of New York City are represented in this vital work. We are joined by experts, leaders, and passionate community activists from all five boroughs, united in our commitment to fostering safer environments for all residents.

The notion that we do not care about victims of gun violence is both false and deeply hurtful. Nobody feels the impact of these tragedies more acutely than the residents of the communities directly affected. We stand in solidarity with those who have lost loved ones and those who continue to endure the trauma of gun violence.

This is why we recognize that to truly create a safe summer we must address the root causes of violence. While we advocate for legislative action to prevent the flow of illegal firearms into our communities, we also acknowledge the importance of addressing the underlying issues that contribute to violence.

Guns exacerbate hate, domestic violence, and anger. It is imperative that we invest in initiatives that promote peace, equity, and opportunity. Safe Summer 2022 is not just about temporary solutions; it is about laying the groundwork for long-term prevention efforts that prioritize the well-being of all New Yorkers. The faces you see today represent the true architects of change. These are the individuals who intimately understand the needs of their communities, who work tirelessly to support at-risk youth, and who advocate for those grappling with systemic poverty and housing insecurity.

As we navigate the challenges of the present moment, we remain steadfast in our pursuit of safety. Our quest for a safer New York City is not a new endeavor—it is a fight that has spanned decades. Safe Summer 2022 is just the beginning; our vision extends far beyond the summer months, encompassing a year-round commitment to safety and well-being. We invite you to stand with us in this critical endeavor. Together, we can build a city where every individual feels safe, valued, and empowered. Let us work hand in hand to create a future defined not by violence, but by compassion, resilience, and hope. Together, we can achieve Safe Summer 2022—and safety for all, 365 days a year.
