Occupy the Corner Queensbridge: A Community Initiative for Safer Neighborhoods

This past Friday, we held our first Occupy the Corner near Queensbridge Houses on the corner of 40th Avenue and 12th Street. Thank you to everyone who came out to join us in this important event to build trust with the community and empower them on their path to change.

At Community Capacity Development, we believe in the power of community. "Occupy the Corner" has already seen great success in Detroit and inspired people nationwide. This initiative aims to reduce gun violence by uniting community members, leaders, and volunteers in high-risk areas.

In neighborhoods where violence, particularly gun violence, poses a constant threat, community members have come together with a powerful initiative: Occupy the Corner. This movement seeks to transform high-risk areas by increasing the presence of community members, leaders, and volunteers on street corners where violence is most prevalent. The mission is clear: engage the community, deter violent activities, and promote a sense of safety and solidarity.

Key Aspects of "Occupy the Corner"

  1. Community Presence Volunteers and community leaders gather in high-risk areas, providing a positive and non-confrontational presence. This increased visibility is designed to discourage violent behavior and make these areas safer for everyone.

  2. Engagement and Support Engaging with residents is at the heart of this initiative. By offering support, resources, and services to those in need, Occupy the Corner helps to address some of the root causes of violence. This can include distributing information about social services, handing out food and beverages, providing recreational activities for youth, and connecting individuals with job opportunities or educational programs.

  3. Collaboration To create a comprehensive approach to violence prevention, Occupy the Corner collaborates with city agencies, non-profits, and other community organizations. This collaboration ensures that a wide range of resources and support systems are available to the community.

  4. Building Trust Consistent presence and active participation help build trust between residents and local organizations. This trust is crucial for fostering a sense of community ownership and collective responsibility for public safety.

  5. Empowerment By involving community members in the initiative, Occupy the Corner empowers them to take an active role in improving their neighborhoods. This empowerment helps create a culture of peace and mutual support, encouraging residents to work together for a safer community.

Why is "Occupy the Corner" important?

Violence can tear communities apart, but initiatives like Occupy the Corner show that it’s possible to reclaim and transform our neighborhoods. By being proactive and community-centered, this initiative addresses violence head-on, promoting safer and more connected communities. It’s about more than just reducing crime; it’s about building a better future for everyone in the neighborhood.
